Glenrothes 1995

Glenrothes is one of those distilleries that I swear I’ve had quite a bit of, and in fact, haven’t had much at all.

Not for lack of trying, mind you. Currently there’s some Glenrothes at the LCBO. If they were approachable, I may even consider them.

Sadly they are not. But that’s more on my wallet than on Glenrothes.

Glenrothes 1995 is from their year series, for lack of a better word. You’ll find different ones pop up each year. The year denotes the year they were distilled, and you have to hunt around the package to find out how old they are.

This one is 19 years old . They all come in the cool, ball shaped whisky jug that I assume is either really easy or really hard to pour out of. Feel free to comment if you’ve poured one, I’m at a loss here.

Not much else to talk about here. It’s a mixture of Sherry and Ex-bourbon, and I specifically hunted it down to try more Glenrothes. All seem like a good plan. So let’s see how this tastes, shall we?

Distillation Date: 1995

Bottling Date: 2011

Cask Types: 70% refill ex-bourbon and 30% ex-sherry (American and Spanish oak)

Abv: 43%

Colour: 5Y 8/6

Nose: Grapefruit, peach, alcohol, raisin, cereal

Light nose, especially for a 16 year old dram. Giving it time, It’s hard to pick up more than acidic notes. Lots of stone fruit.

Not stoned fruit, this isn’t… wait, where the hell did I go with this joke?

Given time there’s a wheat/cereal element to it. And a rich note that adds some much needed depth.

Taste: Peach, cumin, honey, oily, lemon

Simple on the tongue, like that one girl you lost your virginity to behind the circus.

Lots of honey, decent mouthfeel given the low abv, and lots of acid again. It’s not wowing me. More so it’s reminding me of less complex drams. The oil doesn’t grow into anything.

The earth element is nice though. And again, needed.

Finish: Ginger, black pepper, mushroom, almond, rye bread, blackberry

Better finish, now we’re talking. Given: It’s all earth, and some cereal notes, but really, this was needed. I don’t know if I love the combination, or if I’ve been hurt by the taste and nose, but this is a lot better.

Conclusion: It’s better than the standard edition. That’s an improvement. And the finish is the key to all of it. Is it a good key that leads into your house or a bad one that leads into a monster’s lair? That’s the question.

The taste and nose were very light. The lower Abv here hasn’t done it any favours. It has a nice mouthfeel, but for me, this one is a pass.
