GlenDronach Peated


Recently I was lucky enough to join the Toronto Whisky Society in the first of what we hope is a constant amount of tastings.

In order to give everyone a shot at coming out, the entry “fee” was to bring a bottle that was NAS/10 years that was at least half full.

The following reviews are from said tasting, in which I was able to take my time, take pictures that don’t just show off one part of my apartment, and ensure my palate was thoroughly rinsed (with water) between each whisky.

GlenDronach Peated is peated to 25ppm. Why do I say that? Shouldn’t this standard we’re all used to just need the word “Peated” after it?

Well… kinda. You see, prior to 2002, all GlenDronach was peated. Between 0-15ppm each.

I’ll give you a second to take that in. Even though I’ve literally stated it every chance I get when this distillery comes up.

So when we say GlenDronach Peated, it seems like some NAS silliness. But this one is fully peated to 25ppm, and aged in ex-bourbon casks and then finished in Oloroso and PX sherry casks.

Why? Because being in a sherry cask is part of being a GlenDronach, just like limping to school and never telling someone about your pain is part of being a poor boy in North America.

Let’s see how this tastes, shall we?

Price: $89.95 CAD at the LCBO

Region: Highland

Abv: 46%

Colour: 5Y 9/6

Nose: Peat, cotton, pollen, lime, goldenrod

Peat is obvious, however this is not a peat bomb. It’s softer, lighter, and overall calmer nose than what I was expecting.

So basically like expecting to hang out with veterans and here war stories and instead you end up with florists who tell you funny stories. It’s still a good night, just not what you were expecting.

Taste: Lime, butterscotch, floral, lemon candy, floral (again), cocoa

So there’s some floral bits. Or maybe this was the last of 7 drams I reviewed and I was starting to feel the alcohol. Or the music. Or both.

I’ve rarely had drams where the peat aspect becomes floral, however this one is better than most. It’s not taking over. Or it’s not like that time you ate potpourri. Less going to the hospital, for instance.

Finish: Smoke, honey, mushroom, light caramel, gravel, lime

Smoke comes back on the finish. If you wondered where it was, it was just waiting for the end. Very earth forward peat on this one. Sweet parts too.

The earth takes it a little too far, so be ready for some gravel parts. Not a fun part of the dram, sadly.

Conclusion: This was working out to be a really nice dram until the end. The over-abundance of earth was the breaking point. I’m a little bit more sturdy against too much floral parts as well, so it comes as no surprise that the unbalanced nature of the taste didn’t throw me off.

That said, it made it into my notes, so buyer beware.

This is a different style of peat versus an Ardbeg or a Laphroaig. Keep that in mind and you’ll enjoy this.
