Mac Albert

Thanks to /u/muaddib99 for this mystery sample.

As a break from getting through some of my whisky samples, I was offered a mystery sample before a whisky tasting. You know, to relax.

So he poured myself and /u/devoz a mystery dram of Mac Albert whisky. This whisky is imported from Scotland to the Dominican Republic, where it’s blended with local matured spirit.

Does that mean it’s a Scotch? Not by any definition, in Scotland or anywhere outside of the Dominican Republic. However it’s sold as a whisky. It’s below the normal alcohol by volume, and I’m guessing it’s mixed with rum.

Where’s the whisky come from? Who knows? I am glad it didn’t make me go more blind.

Let’s see how this tastes, shall we?

MacAlbert 1.jpg

Price: $49.99 USD for 1.75 L

Region: Dominican Republic

Abv: 37.5%

Colour: 2.5Y 8/10

Nose: Melon, salt, butter/oak, alcohol

Very light nose. Extremely light nose. I’m guessing it’s young. Gives off some melon and salt given some time.

Takes a long time of nosing it to pull much of anything.

Taste: Melon, leaves, plums, peach, oak

More melon, some vegetal. Frankly based on what I was told, I was expecting this to be rougher.

Don’t get me wrong: It needs more time in the cask. It’s rough, and watery.

Finish: Lots of light honey, cardamon, cinnamon, cereal, smoke

Tons of light honey at the end. Rough. And spice. That’s about it. It’s oddly sweet and cereal based.

Conclusion: Frankly not the worst thing I’ve ever tasted. I really did think it was a mid aged Canadian blend. And it turned out to not be that bad. Sure, there’s things that would be a lot better to drink. However it’s unbalanced and really needs time opened.

From what I was told, this grew quite a bit after being opened. At first it was all earth and pain. That sounds closer. I don’t know how long it’ll stay like this, however buyer beware and let it breathe.

70/100

Guess: A Canadian whisky that is roughly 6 years, maybe 47%?

Actually: Mac Albert Whisky
